Balancing: how transformation can change your outlook

balanced rocks

The common river rock assumes a texture based on its placement within the river.  Each rock is washed over for years and years, smoothing out the edges of the rock, changing the shape to conform to the water’s will.  Transformations occur within nature as a matter of course; a caterpillar becomes a butterfly; a tree grows from a single seed into a towering giant.  A rock forms from three different processes, and science places them in classes based on how they form (igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary).  But it is in breaking down by the elements that we can truly see what a rock’s true nature is – does it have cracks that fracture on contact with water and dropping tempuratue, will it split open with the application of a little ice?  Or like these river rocks, will it be worn down smooth by time and friction?

River rocks are not just beautiful objects – they are proof positive that change will occur, that it does occur.  Nature is the ultimate reminder that nothing remains static, and even if something is not beautiful in the process of that change – think of the earth at the moment – all the mud and little bits of snow scattered around, yellow old grass and thin skins of half rotten leaves – through time it will once again reclaim that beauty.  The modern world, created by humans, sometimes doesn’t seem very beautiful – but perhaps consider that it is currently in process of change, and like the sleepy half-winter-half-spring earth, it will awake again soon.

The rocks in the photo above have not only come back into balance, each part perfectly aligned with its purpose, and worn down to its essence, but have also been carefully selected for their purpose.  Consider that what you select to see will colour your idea about whether the world is changing for better over time, and whether by seeing further than current world events, social media or “the news” wishes us to see will help us in our own transformation.  Consider bringing yourself back into the deep knowledge of nature by reflecting on its cycles and the cycles within your own life.
