Grasshopper in the Greens
Did you know there are over 18,000 species of grasshoppers in the world? Here are some more very strange facts about grasshoppers:
- Grasshoppers have no ears! Instead they use circular membranes in their abdomen. These are called “tympanum”.
- They have five eyes! The two eyes on either side of the head are commonly known about and easily visible to humans. Grasshoppers also have an eye at the base of each antenna as well as one between the antennae. These additional eyes are called “ocelli” or “simple eyes” and only have the ability to differentiate between light and dark, which the larger & visible eyes cannot do.
