Great Horned Owls: Nature’s Best Night Predator?

Great Horned Owl

Do you love the look of this wise owl?  He might look so smug because he is one of the most adaptable predators in the night.  Although other birds of prey seem to be on the decline, these Great Horned Owls, second largest species of owl in Canada, have kept a stable population despite human encroachment and disturbance of their territory.

Eating almost anything that goes bump in the night, these owls aren’t afraid of things that even most people run from: snakes, porcupines & skunks.  They also eat other birds of prey’s nestlings – just take a look at this archived footage of a pair of them marauding an eagle nest.

Wouldn’t want to be the target of the Great Horned Owl when it’s looking for a midnight snack!
