mosaic
In addition to my stock images, I create artwork for art sake, that is, without any worry of it making money; art for me, and perhaps you. It’s gratifying to not to have to justify work to anyone or anything, including the bottom line.
I still love creating with my hands so anything productive that gets me away from the computer is a good thing. It is a guilty pleasure right now but my goal in life is to do this kind of work on a full time basis.
This first piece is also my latest, and my current favourite (as it should be). I learned a lot while putting this one together. I didn’t really keep track but it probably took 100 hours over 4 months. I could do a second one a lot faster now that I’ve done it once, although I think each one will be it’s own journey. I can’t wait!

Face of an Angel (Virgin in the Rocks)
Bill Frymire 2007
Based on Leonardo Da Vinci’s “La Scapigliata”, this piece was coaxed out of the rocks using 1296 natural slate and travertine one inch stone tiles. the original is 37″ x 37″
Other than Da Vinci, I was partially inspired by Salvidor Dali’s Gala Contemplating the Mediterranean Sea
The further back you look at it the more you see the image of the woman’s face. If you walk away from the monitor and take a look at it from further back you get the same effect.
I’ll try to write more on the process when I get a chance.
This image is available in a limited edition print run of 36 images, available from the artist.

Hey Bill, did you used Andreamosaic to make that mosaic? It looks very clean, neat and professional.

Yes , It does a great job and has some very useful features.
I also experimented with other Mosaic software . I found depending on the original image, different software works better for different images.
