Ready, Set, Start: Do goals help with new projects?

Do you ever find yourself at a loss when you start a new project?  

Setting an end goal can help you when setting out on a new project.  Some experts recommend answering a series of questions in order to get yourself ready for success and outline your next steps.

However, this TED talk from entrepreneur Derek Sivers, advises people to keep their goals to themselves in order to achieve them.  However, Leo Babauta (founder of Zen Habits, a blog about how to focus on what is most important in your life) argues that goals are not necessary for achievement.

Do you think that people who tell others about their goals are more or less likely to achieve them?  Or are you with Leo Babauta when he says that we don’t need to set goals?
