Reconnecting with old friends, yourself, and your mission
Are you wishing you could get back in touch with someone you miss in your life? Our totally connected world can make it easy to reach out to people you miss, but sometimes you can’t find the right words.
It’s easy to just put any old thing into an email or facebook message and hope for the best, but think about the people that you still have in your life – what are you contributing to them that keeps them there? And what are they in turn helping you with?
Think about the things that have connected you to the person you want to reach out to, and then send them something related to that. Did you bond over your shared love of art, or a certain genre of music? Was the friendship based around good food and wine? Think back on those memories, and then check in with how you would like to reconnect with them – drop a quick but meaningful message in their inbox, or go old school and send them a quick postcard, note or card. But! Before you do any of those things – check in with yourself.
And think about why you miss them from your life. Were they a person who you felt like connected to your core goals, and energized you to go after those goals? Take a minute to write down the goals you remember having when you were friends with that person, connecting with them in your life. Can you see the person that you were, and the goals that you had? How are those goals different from the ones you have now? Are you closer or further away from who you wanted to be then?
Now jot down your current goals – are they the same? If you, and your goals have changed drastically, perhaps there is a reason that this person is no longer in your life. But, if you still think that they are a good fit – then go ahead and click send on that email, or mail that card. And then let go of any expectations – remember that the person on the receiving end of your invitation is probably doing exactly the same evaluation that you just did.
