Setting Your Direction – Image of the Week

I enjoy searching through second hand stores to find items that might be interesting to photograph. It can take a great deal of searching to come across something of interest. This old compass and intricately detailed book cover were two such finds.
I thought it would be good to combine the two items in one photograph to contrast the bright shiny brass against the cracked brown leather.
This shot was taken in my studio using a Nikon D700 and a 70-180 macro lens. Two exposures were needed to capture the high contrast tonal range of scene. One for the shiny compass, and one for the dark leather book. The two were combined in photoshop to recreate the image as I saw it. This image is available by clicking here.
