Are you a flower fanatic? Do you like annuals? Perennials? It can get a bit pricey to indulge all those urges to plant and gather blooms. Instead, try growing your own from seed! It’s a wonderful way to beat the winter blues and save a little money while brightening up any room with a little foliage.

How to start flowers from seed:

What you will need:

-seeds for any flower you wish to grow (check that it is ok for your area with the salesperson and how long it may take to grow; also some perennials require a cold period before they will germinate; you can try using your fridge for these)
-potting soil
-egg cartons or plastic divided growing trays
-larger pots for later
-watering can
-a warm spot with lots of sunshine or fluorescent light
-time to water and watch your flower children grow!

1) Place potting soil in egg cartons or divided trays.

2) Water soil until damp.

3) add seeds (for a good idea of what to plant when, check out this page)

4) cover and water again.

5) water as much as required to keep soil moist

6) watch your flowers grow!

7) transplant to larger pots

8) harden off (place plants for increasing time daily outside until they acclimate or use a cold frame)

9) transplant once spring arrives!

Have you ever started seeds indoors?

Well done. You can do the same with wild seed as well though they might need to spend some time in a freezer to be scarified in order to germinate. Go forth and grow!
