Taking Stock (Photos)

Throughout my career, many of the images I have produced are intended to serve as illustrations of general concepts. Their content is broadly appealing, approachable, and identifiable. As such, they speak to people; they communicate. While this remains true of the image above, it, like many of the images involving my family as models, holds a poignant and personal significance for me as a husband and father, over and above that of a professional photographer capturing and preserving the light and the moment.
Taking stock of the stock photography I have made over many years is, for me, like looking at a portfolio that is also a family album. It fills me with pride and gratitude, professional and personal. In this one, my daughter, Rachel, wanted to stay home from school, claiming she was sick. My wife, Alana, really is checking her temperature, with all the attention of a concerned parent. I happened to have my camera. Images like this are a study of life’s intimate, vanishing moments, as well as documentation of my life’s ephemera. It does me well to take stock every now and then.
