World War Water?
Is water going to become a tipping point for our ability to sustain the ever-growing global population?
In our growing world, there are many changes to our environmental systems that have an impact on not just us but also the nature that surrounds us. Some people believe that there will be a global water shortage soon, which may lead to conflict over this precious resource. This documentary film, posted on youtube by it’s maker, Sam Bozzo, and based on a book of the same title are a good starting point if you are interested in these ideas.
Everyone focuses on oil as a flashpoint for global conflict, but in fact oil is only one source of energy, and will eventually be replaced by more sustainable technologies. Nothing can replace water.
So why is the developed world using 10 times the water as compared to developing countries, and how can we conserve it to lessen our impact on this resource? Try this link for lots of helpful ideas. Even taking one idea on board and applying it consistently could really help your impact on the climate.
The good news is, scientists are already trying to develop new technology to convert ocean water into drinkable water using desalination techniques that are cheaper than ever before. In 2012, MIT made a major breakthrough with graphene filtration technology.
What do you think? Are our systems of coping with the human induced evolution of our world environment working? What could we do better to ensure the planet’s resources are more available to those that really require them? Let me know in the comments.
