This illustration is taken from Cassell's Dore Gallery. The original illustration was in The Dore Bible. This engraving depicts Jesus having fallen beneath the weight of the cross that he is carrying. Simon of Cyrene is helping lift the cross and take on the burden. Although a favorite subject of painters, no such incident is ever related in the four gospels of the bible.
